Q&A with MJN
Kansas City knows the most beautiful weddings in the city are created by the most experienced man in the industry. That man being Michael J. Nolte, of course. If you’ve ever wondered what makes his “short list” outside these walls, here’s a look at a few of his favorite things.
Last Book I read…
“The Gifts of Imperfection” by Brene Brown
Bourbon. Favorites include Woodford Reserve (double oaked), Knob Creek, Rare Eagle and Jack Daniels. For black-tie Christmas parties, the elusive and extraordinary, Pappy Van Winkle.
Ralph Lauren. I love his sweaters, plaids and suits especially. It amazes me how his collections transcend all ages of men. Now that’s good design!
Baldwin, Citizens of Humanity and AG for my designer picks. (I literally get compliments every time I wear these guys) Follow the laundry directions, though, they’re too expensive to ruin!
I never leave home without…
my cell phone. (What else would people say nowadays?) I detest that it’s my leash and truly don’t “let down” until I put it down. Now if I just had the same paranoia about remembering my wallet…
Favorite vacation spot:
Anywhere the sand is white and the water turquoise. Cancun is close and affordable. Le Blanc is my new hands-down hotel. (Unbelievable pampering) Can’t wait to be there again next month!
Waterford crystal. All shapes, all patterns, all pieces. Our stemware is a rare pattern, Rosslare, and my barware is Lismore. I have several lamps, actively use my decanters and several of my bigger pieces (bowls and vases) have been gifts from brides.
Favorite KC stores:
Hall’s on the Plaza (ask for Melvin in Men’s) and Nordstrom (ask for Eric Asbury). These guys can really put it together for me. Their taste is spot-on.
Most prized possession…
an antique breakfront I inherited from my dear friend, Ruby. It has a chocolate marble top upon which lots of Waterford looks even more beautiful. I always enjoy telling her story when guests comment on this unique piece.
It’s a tie in Kansas City between Houston’s and YaYa’s. Never a bad meal. In New York, it’s Isabella’s on the Upper West Side.
my Blue Tooth wireless keyboard. It was the best spent $90.00 of the last year and makes texting a breeze. It goes with me everywhere.
My seasonal preference…
For sure Autumn. I enjoy flannel shirts, cool nights with a fire pit outdoors, the foggy days and of course a wood burning fireplace. No gas logs for this guy.
Favorite slow dance song:
“Unchained Melody” by The Righteous Brothers. I love the lyrics, the melody and the memories it evokes.
Perfect weekend agenda:
“Weekends” for me are Sundays, so I try to pack a lot of unwinding into 24 hours. Mass in the morning, lunch out with my girls, afternoon at the pool and an evening movie. I love my Sunday’s to stay low-key.
But if I can sneak out of town…
Big Cedar Lodge in a private cabin transports me to another world. If it’s just a day trip, Arrow Rock, Missouri: population 79. It’s just 90 minutes away, but I’m a direct descendant of one of the old-line families as it was the home of my Great-Grandmother. I spent summers there as a boy and tremendously enjoy the nostalgia evoked by The Lyceum, dinners at The Tavern and walking the deserted streets in the winter.
