I Could Have Danced All Night
My Cardinal Rule for parties: Let there be music from the minute the first guest walks in, until the last guest walks out.
By hiring both a live band and a DJ, that is exactly what you can have too.
I am friends with lots of great bands in town, but for this first foray as a host, I went back to my roots of calling on Garry Mac (913-469-9009) the agent for one of Kansas City’s finest, “Atlantic Express.”
Garry and I have done weddings together for over 25 years. I remember hiring him for weddings I coordinated in Columbia. When I hosted a luncheon at Loch Lloyd for this daughter’s First Communion, I hired Atlantic Express to play then too. And when it comes to great wedding bands…that is exactly what you get when hiring his groups. They aren’t a bar band. They don’t show up late, high, drunk, with groupies, or dirty. (All of which I have had happen with other bands.)
The degree of elegance Atlantic Express lends makes them the go-to choice for a lot of Black-tie events in town. The only drawback is that they are SO darn good that I can’t get the people to stay off the dance floor until the First Dance! (Nor can I get them to go home!)
My DJ choice is not even a “choice.” I just know that when I need the best one for a wedding, I call the same guy over and over and over…because he doesn’t have a peer. Entertainment to Go, owned by Mike Shortino, 816-524-2222 is my guy.
I have hired him to play for many events at our home for graduations, Black-tie Christmas parties, tented Fourth of July and anniversary parties. I had him additionally for Welcome Party in our garage for this wedding.
